Alexei was born with a diagnosis of spina bifida. Because of this diagnosis, the boy can only move around in a wheelchair. But in addition to motor limitations, people with spina bifida have impaired kidney and bladder function. That is why it is so important to undergo a comprehensive urodynamic examination on a regular, annual basis, to monitor whether the kidneys are functioning properly and to adjust the therapy in time.

The entire examination lasts two hours and does not require hospitalization. The doctor-neurologist Galina Tischenko had done all the necessary manipulations during this time in order to make it clear what kind of disorders of urinary system he has at the moment and what kind of corrections they need. The doctor also said that Alexei was an adult, so he could place a catheter to drain the urine, which could not come out by itself (if you do not place the catheter, the residual urine is thrown back into the kidneys, which could lead to their failure). And then she taught Alexei how to self-catheterize. And that means that now Alexey will be independent throughout the day! Also recommendations for further observation were written and appointments were given.

Alexei needs to be examined

Alexei was born with a severe diagnosis - spina bifida. It is a congenital malformation of the spine. Several surgeries were required immediately after birth. But the severe consequences of the diagnosis could not be avoided - Alexei can only move around in a wheelchair.

Despite all the difficulties, the boy's life is very full - he goes to school, he has a million friends. Alexei is involved in sports - he plays in the sledge hockey team and tries his hand at tennis. And also, like any teenager, likes computer games.

In addition to movement problems, people with spina bifida have another feature that can cause serious harm to their health: they have no control over their bladder - they just don't feel that it's time to go to the toilet. Meanwhile, the urine goes back to the kidneys, and the person ends up developing a urinary tract infection: from a mild form of cystitis to a severe one with kidney damage - pyelonephritis.

Such guys like Alexei need to be examined by a neuro-urologist every year. It's called CUDI. It is a comprehensive study that allows you to assess how much the phase of accumulation and emptying of urine is disturbed, and whether you need to compensate for it with medication and to connect additional methods of urine diversion. In other words, CUDI is, in fact, a complete screening of the urinary system.

Now it is extremely important for Alexei to undergo such an examination also because he is entering a new, adult period of life. And there are some nuances, which can be solved only by a specialized doctor.
