Advanced Part Time Studies

TOOBA's one year Advanced Studies Part Time Program in Physical Theatre will interest you if:

  • you have completed a physical theatre training program already and are wanting to bridge the gap into the profession.
  • you are a professional performer and want to fill in gaps in training or attain specialized skills


TOOBA's Advanced Studies Program is geared to both TOOBA graduates and other graduate students and professionals. This is a an Advanved Studies program that allows participants to design a course of study unique to their needs. For new professionals, the program can bridge the gap between training and the theatre profession. For more seasoned performers, the program can enhance performance skills and reawaken creativity.


With TOOBA Faculty, participants create a program of part time study. Required work includes:

  • Core Training & Integration of Performance Tools
    Keep up your training through any combination of TOOBA's Core classes: Morning Fitness Sessions, Corporeal Mime, Physical Acting, Voice, Singing, Dance or Creation
  • Personal Professional Development
    A weekly one hour session to free creative expression, develop communication skills, and clarify personal goals.
  • Studio Time
    Personal rehearsal / creation time in TOOBA's studios



In addition, program components may include:

  • Access to Direction
  • Coaching with any of TOOBA's Core Instructors on new performance material
  • Self-Management & Industry Networking
  • Mentorship or Intern Program
  • Teacher Training in Movement or Acting
  • Directing / Choreography / Creation
  • TOOBA's full list of classes, as available, including Clown, Mask, Physical Acting, Corporeal Mime, Voice, Vocal Body, and Singing.

Advanced Part Time Studies - Requirements:

Participants applying for registration in the Advanced Program at TOOBA Physical Theatre Centre must have:

  • high school graduation (or equivalent)
  • mature student status (age 19 or over)
  • TOOBA's Two Year Diploma of Physical Theatre Arts, or equivalent training
  • a good command of the English language



The Application Process:

If you are a TOOBA graduate, send in a letter of intent regarding your desire to participate. No audition is required for TOOBA graduates. Please contact the office to arrange a course planning time with TOOBA Faculty.

If your previous training took place elsewhere, please send in:

  • a letter which briefly articulates your history as an artist, current goals, and why you want to participate in the Advanced Program at TOOBA
  • your theatre resume and a photo
  • a completed Participant's Questionnaire (form obtainable from our office)
  • a letter of recommendation from a director or teacher who knows your work and who is willing to be contacted personally (please include phone number/email)


Our office will contact you with an audition date and time. (Applicants unable to audition in Vancouver may send a video-taped sample of their work 5-10 minutes in length.)


The Artistic Director and one or more faculty will audition each candidate. The audition will consist of a three minute prepared piece that includes both text and physical work, or a three-minute monologue and a separate short physical piece. Please come ready to play with your piece(s) and take direction. An interview will follow your audition. Applicants will be notified within one week regarding the success of their audition.
