James Long James artistic directs Theatre Replacement with fellow artist Maiko Bae Yamamoto. The company's work has been seen in Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Seattle and Cardiff, Wales. Shows by TR include, The Empty Orchestra, Broiler, BIOBOXES, Sexual Practices of the Japanese, i am sam stan, Yufo, Clark and I Somewhere in Connecticut and Train. In addition to creating this body of work, the company facilitates a series of education programs; for two years TR collaborated with Vancouver's The Only Animal in producing/teaching Core - a twice-weekly performing artist training room; every two years the company hosts Spark - a five day creation intensive for emerging and established artists: and its International Workshop Series. James is also a freelance instructor, teaching students and established artists in the lower mainland, Seattle and Montreal. As a student he has received training from Ker Wells, Peter Froelich, Daniel Brooks, Denise Clark, Blake Brooker, Penelope Stella, and Nigel Charnock, Cathy Naden among many others. He has been nominated for and won multiple awards in design, performance and innovation.
As a freelance actor he has had the pleasure of working with Rumble Productions, urban ink, Leaky Heaven Circus, The Only Animal, Stan's Cafe, and the Electric Company, among many others. He was recently commissioned to write a new work about Vancouver for Ruby Slippers Theatre and francophone company Theatre La Seizieme. La Vue D'en Haut and The View From Above ran in succession during March/April, 2008 and won The Sydney Risk Award for New Play.
